Police Corruption Ex Officer Punished

Ex policeman who sold accident data to CMCs to pay £367,772

Former Police Officer, Nigel Mungur, has already received a 5 year custodial sentence, reduced to 4 years on appeal, he now has to pay back nearly £370,000 after being handed  a confiscation order, reports You Talk Insurance.

Police Officers occupy a privileged position of trust within the community, so it is always extremely disappointing to see one of their number abuse that trust.  This man sold the personal information of people involved in road traffic accidents to claims management companies, the accidents occurred in 2014.

It seems that GDPR is coming along in the nick of time.  Whilst it’s provisions have resulted in Police forces and companies having to spend a lot of time and resource addressing the new requirements, this should provide much more protection for members of the public who believe their data is secure.

Don’t forget that claims marketing companies must have your explicit consent to them approaching you for marketing purposes.  They also have strict  time limits within which they are supposed to let you know where they get their information from, they also have to deal with requests for disclosure of data they hold on you within 30 days.  You will have the right to object to processing, and the right to be forgotten!  If any data they hold about you is incorrect you have the right to rectification.  There are a whole host of other rights and freedoms protected by the Regulation so let’s hope it has the desired effect.

Data protection is now one of the biggest risks to companies where they fail to protect it!  Swinging fines and penalties ensue where there is a breach and Police Forces or companies have failed in their duty to the data subject.  It all changes on the 25th May 2018 so be prepared!
